Why install a dedicated EV charger?

While it’s technically possible to charge an EV using a regular household power point, it’s not ideal. Here’s why a dedicated EV charger installed by a licensed Electrician makes sense:

• Faster charging times — up to 3x quicker than a regular outlet

• Safer charging, with built-in protection from overloading or faults

• Better battery health through regulated charging

• Adds resale value to your home or business

What to consider before installing an EV charger

Installing an EV charger isn’t a plug-and-play job — it requires planning, correct setup, and a licensed electrician. Here are the top factors to think about:

Charger type:

• Level 1: Portable EV charger – uses a standard power point and is very slow. Comes standard with EVs. Not recommended as it can burn out a standard power point and cause overloading of the power circuit.

• Level 2: Wall Mounted charger – the most common option for homes and businesses, much faster than level 1 chargers. Available in single and 3-phase power.

• Level 3: Public charger – fastest charger, but not suitable for home use, installed in shopping centers, car parks and public areas.

Charger brand:

We can either install your preferred brand of EV wall charger or supply and install a Tesla Gen3 wall connector.

Tesla chargers are the most popular type we install and are the best value for money. They can be used with single phase or 3 phase power and are compatible with non-Tesla vehicles by using a Type 2 connector.

We’re experienced with all brands of EV charges, including manufacturer brands such as BMW, Hyuandai, Kia, Mercedes and 3rd party chargers such as Zappi, Fronius, Wallbox, JetCharge and Ocular and can install which ever type you prefer.

Location of the charger:

• Garage or driveway? – Ensure there’s enough space to reach your car with the charging cable

• Weatherproofing – Outdoor installations require IP-rated enclosures to protect from rain and heat

• Future EVs? – Consider cable length and mounting height that will work for multiple vehicle sizes

Hint: Install near your switchboard or meter box if possible — this can reduce installation complexity and cost.

Your Home’s Electrical Capacity:

Some homes may need switchboard upgrades or additional wiring to support a high-output EV charger, especially older homes with limited capacity.

We’ll assess whether:

• Your main switchboard needs upgrading

• A dedicated circuit is required

• Your power supply (single-phase or three-phase) supports fast charging

Note: Three-phase homes can support faster charging compared to single-phase.

Smart features & load management:

Many newer EV chargers include:

• Wi-Fi app control – for scheduling and monitoring

• Solar integration – so you can charge from your solar panels

• Dynamic load balancing – to prevent overloading your home’s electrical system

The cost to install an Electric Vehicle Charger varies on a variety of factors, including those listed above. To give you an idea of costs, a straightforward install of a dedicated 15amp circuit for an EV charger, where the customer has supplied the charger, costs from $580 +GST.
