Investing in an electric vehicle is a big decision — and a smart one for the future. With more Australians making the switch to EVs, having a fast, safe, and reliable home charging setup is more important than ever.
While it’s technically possible to charge an EV using a regular household power point, it’s not ideal.
The benefits of installing a dedicated wall mounted charging point include:
-
Faster charging times — up to 3x quicker than a regular outlet
-
Safer charging, with built-in protection from overloading or faults
-
Better battery health through regulated charging
-
Adds value to your home or business
Whether you’re charging overnight or need faster daytime top-ups, our licenced Electricians ensure your EV charger is installed correctly and complies with all safety standards, so you can power up with confidence.

Installing an electric car charger for home or your workplace requires planning, correct setup, and a licensed electrician.
We have listed the top factors to think about, but if you have any questions or need personailsed advice, please get in touch.
EV Charger type:
-
Level 1 – Portable EV charger: uses a standard power point and is very slow. Comes standard with EVs. Not recommended as it can burn out a standard power point and cause overloading of the power circuit.
-
Level 2 -Wall Mounted charger: the most common option for homes and businesses, much faster than level 1 chargers. Available in single and 3-phase power.
- Level 3 – Public charger: fastest charger, but not suitable for home use, installed in shopping centers, car parks and public areas.
Location of the charger:
-
Garage or driveway? – Ensure there’s enough space to reach your car with the charging cable
-
Weatherproofing – Outdoor installations require IP-rated enclosures to protect from rain and heat
-
Future EVs? – Consider cable length and mounting height that will work for multiple vehicle sizes
Hint: Install near your switchboard or meter box if possible — this can reduce installation complexity and cost.
Your home’s current electrical capacity:
Some homes may need switchboard upgrades or additional wiring to support a high-output EV charger, especially older homes with limited capacity.
We’ll assess:
-
Whether your main switchboard needs upgrading
-
If a dedicated circuit is required
-
Whether your power supply supports fast charging (three-phase homes can support faster charging compared to single-phase)
Choosing a charger:
When selecting an EV charger, factors to consider are:
- App control – for scheduling and monitoring – great if your power company has off-peak tariffs.
- Charging speed – if you have single phase power, the max kw you can charge your car at is 7kw. If you have 3 phase power, you can charge up to 22kw (also known as fast charging)
- Solar integration – this is required if you want to use your PV solar system to charge your electric vehicle (also known as eco charging)
- Compatibility with your electric vehicle model – Most new EVs sold in Australia in 2025 are equipped with a Type 2 socket. However, some older EV models which have a Type 1 socket may need an adapter to use modern Type 2 chargers.
EV Charger Brands:
Option 1: We can install your preferred brand you have purchased
If you’ve already purchased an EV charger, we’re happy to install it for you.
Some people prefer to buy a charger that matches their car brand — for example, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi or Hyundai.
However, you don’t have to use your car maker’s branded charger. Many people choose a reputable third-party charger instead, such as Zappi, Fronius, Wallbox, JetCharge, Goodwe, SolarEdge and Ocular.
You can use 3rd party chargers, as long as they meets Australia standards and has a Type 2 connection.
Option 2: We can supply and install
For your convenience, we can supply and install a charger.
Two popular chargers are the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector and Zappi EV chargers.
Tesla chargers are great value for money. They support both single-phase and three-phase power and use type 2 charger, making them compatible with non-Tesla EVs. They available in 7kw (for single phase power) and 11kw (for 3-phase power), and come with an app so you can set your your charging schedule.
While there is a Charge from Solar option in the Tesla app, in order to use it, you must also have a Tesla vehicle and Tesla Powerwall battery.
If you have solar PV at home, and want to utilise your excess solar, then you might consider a Zappi charger.
myenergi Zappi EV chargers are more expensive then Telsas, but offer more features. They are available in 7kw (for single phase power) and 22kw (for 3-phase power), come with an app and also feature solar integration.
You can choose to either draw power from the grid, use excess power from your solar system, or a mixture of both.

How much it costs to install an EV charger depends on two things:
a) If your switchboard needs upgrading – You can text or email us a photo of your switchboard and we can let you know if you’ll need a switchboard upgrade in order to install your EV charger.
b) Charger brand – chargers with solar integration such as Zappi are more expensive than basic ones such as Tesla (see charger brands above).
We can either install whichever brand charger you have purchased. Or for your convenience, we can supply and install.
