While it’s technically possible to charge an EV using a regular household power point and level 1 portable charger, it’s not ideal.
The benefits of installing a dedicated wall mounted charging point include:
-
Faster charging times — up to 3x quicker than a regular outlet
-
Safer charging, with built-in protection from overloading or faults
-
Better battery health through regulated charging
-
Adds value to your home or business
EV Charger type:
-
Level 1 – Portable EV charger: uses a standard power point and is very slow. Comes standard with EVs. Not recommended as it can burn out a standard power point and cause overloading of the power circuit.
-
Level 2 -Wall Mounted charger: the most common option for homes and businesses, much faster than level 1 chargers. Available in single and 3-phase power.
- Level 3 – Public charger: fastest charger, but not suitable for home use, installed in shopping centers, car parks and public areas.

Installing an electric car charger for home or your workplace requires planning, correct setup, and a licensed electrician.
We have listed the top factors to think about, but if you have any questions or need personailsed advice, please get in touch.
Location of the charger:
-
Garage or driveway? – Ensure there’s enough space to reach your car with the charging cable
-
Weatherproofing – Outdoor installations require IP-rated enclosures to protect from rain and heat
-
Future EVs? – Consider cable length and mounting height that will work for multiple vehicle sizes
Pro tip: Install near your switchboard or meter box if possible — this can reduce installation complexity and cost.
Your home’s current electrical capacity:
Homes with older switchboards may need a switchboard upgrade.
If you are wanting to use fast charging, your home needs to be connected to 3 phase power.
When selecting an EV charger, factors to consider are:
- Solar integration – this is required if you want to use your PV solar system to charge your electric vehicle.
- Dynamic load balancing – regulates electricity use throughout your house to ensure there’s enough power available for your other electrical appliances. Also important if you have more than 1 electric vehicle.
- Your home’s maximum charging speed – if you have single phase power, the max kw you can charge your car at is 7kw. If you have 3 phase power, you can charge up to 22kw (also known as fast charging).
- Your car’s maximum charging speed – check your car’s user manual for it’s maximum charging speed
- Compatibility with your electric vehicle model – Most new EVs sold in Australia in 2025 are equipped with a Type 2 socket, making them compatible with all Type 2 chargers. However, some older EV models which have a Type 1 socket may need an adapter to use modern Type 2 chargers.
- Application – EV chargers installed in apartments and commercial premises may need extra infrastructure or specific models. For example, there are models specifically for fleet charging, or regulating power consumption from a shared building.
- Price – see our comparison chart below
EV Charger Brands:
You can use any brand of charger, as long as they meet Australian standards and have a Type 2 connection.
Some people prefer to buy a charger that is sold by their electric vehicle manufacturer such as Tesla, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Kia, BMW, Audi or Hyundai.
However, you don’t have to use your car maker’s charger. In fact many of them are manufactured by EV charger companies anyway. For example, BYD sells EV Switch chargers.
We install all EV charger brands. Popular brands in Australia include Zappi, Fronius, Tesla, Wallbox, Ocular, Sigenergy, ABB, JetCharge, Enex and Goodwe. Currently Zappi is the most popular choice for those with Solar PV.
If you are after a commercial charger, JetCharge, Sigenergy and Ocular have options for workplaces, public areas and shared buildings which includes fleet management, billing solutions and load management systems.
We understand getting the right charger at the right price is an important, so we have put together an EV Charger comparison chart so you can to compare brands, features and costs.

While the cost of buying an EV charger varies depending on the features you choose, install costs can also vary.
To give you an idea – a straight-forward home installation, where the EV charger is installed next to the switchboard, starts from $650 to install a single phase charger and from $900 to install a 3 phase.
However, this can increase depending on:
- Location of the charger – the distance and accessibility to your meter box.
- If your switchboard needs upgrading – older switchboards may need to be upgraded to support EV charging.
- Single or 3 phase – 3 phase cost more than single phase due to larger cables and extra labour.
